On June 17, the Bacon Family and friends launched the Charlotte Helen Bacon Foundation (CHB Foundation) at the Sing Louder Benefit Concert in Mamaroneck, NY. The evening was filled with a beautiful blend of the past and future accompanied by music from The Alternate Routes and Unforgettable Fire.
The current board of directors from the CHB Foundation honored it’s Newtown Kindness roots by paying tribute to the many children and efforts that is has honored in the last 5 years of the Charlotte Bacon Act of Kindness Award. Also in attendance was the original Newtown Kindness Board of Directors who were asked to come on stage and receive their personal Act of Kindness medal. The Alternate Routes finished off the first half of the night by playing Nothing More, the song that the band wrote for Newtown Kindness. Lastly, the audience participated in a sing along with the band as it played Charlotte’s favorite song, Home by Phil Phillips.
The second half of the evening shared the vision for the future of the CHB Foundation. The audience were the privileged witnesses to view a home video of Charlotte never shared before. Joel and JoAnn Bacon also shared how they plan to honor their spirited little girl through scholarships, therapy dogs, and the personal stories of their children Guy and Charlotte captured in their published children’s books: Good Dogs, Great Listeners and The Dogs of Newtown. Lastly, the Bacons shared a bit of the their heartbreaking journey of grief and how they have chosen to incorporate this journey into the foundation by helping to fund organizations and research that helps bereaved families that have suffered the loss of a child. The evening was finished out with Unforgettable Fire playing U2 tribute songs that had the audience dancing.
Many guests left the event with mason jar luminaries with the lyrics from the song Home printed on it, and a quote from little Charlotte herself. The quote read “Sing Louder” – Charlotte Helen Bacon, December 2012.
